About the author: John Dudeney PhD, BSc, FRAS, FRGS, OBE was Deputy Director of the British Antarctic Survey; Chairman of various international scientific organisations; UK representative on the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programmes and Expert Advisor to the UK delegation of the Antarctic Treaty. He was awarded the Polar Medal by HM the Queen and the OBE for services to science. A range of hills in Antarctica was named after John in 2020. He currently lectures regularly on Antarctic tour ships and elsewhere.
