Extract from the Foreword by Julian Pettifer
'He was a professional forester and a brilliant self-taught naturalist and wildlife photographer. Above all, from our point of view, he could communicate his enthusiasm to others. ...a huge portfolio of nature photographs of the highest quality. Now we are able to share some of them with her [Bridget]. What I find uncanny, is that in writing the text, she has found and reproduced Don's distinctive 'voice'.
A well-known naturalist, forester and nature photographer, Don MacCaskill died in May, 2000 while out for a walk in the forest he loved, his camera as ever at the ready.
Faced with a collection of between three and four thousand transparencies his wife, Bridget, felt that so many of these were outstanding examples of both a gifted photographer and a dedicated naturalist, that some of them should be made available to others interested in similar pursuits. It quickly became apparent, as Bridget began checking and cataloguing, that these pictures were of outstanding merit; they also formed a kind of photographic autobiography of the man himself, his concern for nature and his need to try and demonstrate, through his photography, the responsibility of Man to that natural world of which he is a part.
Don's 'mate' in most of his endeavours (and a keen naturalist herself), Bridget has put together a book of stunning photography, with text that gives the reader a delightful taste of Nature through the seasons and an appreciation of the nature photographer's tasks over the year. Prepare to be enthralled by the work of a master.
The whole work is complemented by the poetry of Jim Crumley, each poem inspired by one of Don's photographs.

A milestone in nature photography, this book will be of immense appeal to lovers of wildlife, the natural world and all those with an appreciation of the art of photography.
'...As I suspected, The Wind in my Face is excellent from start to finish. From the opening native American Indian quote, the narrative of the changing seasons, to the imagery contained within the many excellent photographs, it is a superb collection and a fitting tribute to a man, his life and his work. Bridget MacCaskill has done an impressive job in collating this collection into a readable and accessible book deserved of any bookshelf.
It is for all who have a mind and passion for secret wild places and the creatures that live there. This is must for those days when you are trapped in the office or at home decorating and want to dream of such mystical places'. Roebuck, Northumberland Wildlife Trust.
'...the beautiful coloured pictures and short poems take us through the seasons recording what nature reveals to the eager and sensitive photographer. Animals, birds, plants and views are captured with astonishing colour and clarity. ...This is a beautiful book which can be pored over and enjoyed time and time again. A lovely present at any time of the year'. Keswick Reminder
'...a beautiful record of nature through the seasons in and around his beloved part of Scotland. This delightful book is filled with hundreds of images of birds and mammals, from Golden Eagles to Pine Martens, but it is the evocative photographs of Scotland's scenery that I liked most'. BTO News
'This beautiful book is divided into four sections, each representing a season, taking the reader on a journey spanning a whole year. ...The photographs of foxes, deer and birds of prey particularly stand out and his landscapes are absolutely breathtaking. ...the book is so inspiring that it is a must for anyone with an interest in nature art or photography'.
